fruux – free beer and new features

Well – not exactly free beer. We just wanted to catch your interest. And obviously it worked. ;-)

Here is a brief summary of the topics we are currently working on.

basic features:

  • signup and modify your account via client application
  • deploying additional sync servers (we thought about using google app engine, but currently gae is no final product and has no ssl support. anyway we have a working beta of the fruux server running on gae. if google starts production mode and adds ssl support: we are already prepared)
  • addressbook group syncing
  • webapplication (manage your contacts on the go)
  • social features (described here)

maybe basic, maybe pro features:

  • ical syncing
  • preferences syncing
  • safari bookmark syncing

pro features:

  • external sync plugins
    • google contacts plugin (sync your contacts with your gmail / google apps contacts)
    • google calendar plugin (sync your ical calendars with your google calendar

Although all of the above is work in progress, you wont see everything right in the next release!

We’d rather like to hear what features you would like to see in the next version of fruux! What features are most important to you? Are there any additional features you’d like to see in the next version of fruux?

We are looking forward for your comments, your posting on our fruux @ facebook page and/or your emails.

UPDATE:

Maybe we should postpone our google contacts plugin? Apple added iPhone <-> Addressbook.app <-> google contact syncing with 10.5.3 (via: Google Mac Blog).

Are You going to release a server version, so anybody could use it on their web, e.g. intranet-server (OSX based)?

  2. Dominik Says:

Currently fruux is an asp-solution and at this time there are no plans for a “user-hostable version”. This may change in the future, but right now the vast majority of our users is focused on additional features instead of a “self-hostable server version” of fruux.

File synchronization ! Why should I sync two addressbooks on two Macs but my files aren’t in sync :-(

  4. Daniel Says:

    Hey flexo,

i think it’s smart Fruux isn’t focusing on file synchronization. You can try the all-in-one software sync products, but they don’t work for me.

Anyways good luck Fruux, it’s quite a hard problem you’re trying to solve.
Good to see more companies trying to solve this.
One thing I’m curious about is your server, do you use SyncML or a different language?

    cheers
    Daniel

Safari bookmarks and preference syncing would be top features for me! Syncing (multiple) calendars between macs and Google Apps would be a bonus.

  6. paul Says:

    now my adressbook is synced,
the next thing I need, would be safari bookmark sync
    and then a calendar sync

a cool feature would be itunes library sync (but its to much data i think)

  7. Dominik Says:

While we agree, that iTunes syncing (or filesyncing in general) would be really nice-to-have features we still (currently) have no plans to offer filesyncing. As paul mentioned: It would put a lot of load on the systems and produce a lot of traffic.

An update featuring calendar syncing will be released some time soon.
Bookmarks and Preferences are on our todo list, too but probably wont make it right into the next version.

    Hi folks,
I tested fruux some months ago and I am looking forward to a new release.
How long do I have to wait for it?
Do not implement too many features – try to solve the bugs!

    All the best!

I have had nothing but problems with MobileMe, and fruux worked as soon as I started it up. I would love to see Calendar, Preferences and files eventually. Nice work.
